Everyone is lonely. No matter how happy and fulfilled lives they may appear to be leading, everyone experiences moments of loneliness. Some people are good at hiding it, others are more expressive and feel the need to share it with the world. Loneliness is the pandemic of the age we live in. According to the most recent data, half of the adult Australians from the feels lonely at least once a week. So, how to fight loneliness?

What Loneliness Does to You?

Although it may not appear like it, loneliness impacts our lives more than we know. Apparently, our bodies react to the state our minds are in. Therefore, scientist have reportedly concluded that the state of loneliness may have the same effects as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day.

Apart from the impact it has on our organisms, loneliness widens the gap between the lonely person and the group. The reasons are many, but the most obvious is that we hesitate to share our inner thoughts and feelings with others because of the fear of becoming misunderstood and ridiculed.

An Advice to Think About

Do not get me wrong, this is a serious topic. Offering any kind of unsolicited advice may not be a smart thing to do. We always recommend seeking professional help if the problem is serious. However, we just wanted to connect and put some light into otherwise not so bright topic. So, here it goes.

Recently, I came across the advice from a friend who is a therapist. His words, although spoken in a non-formal conversation, struck me. I will try to rephrase them here. He said that there are two possible ways of looking at the problem:

  • One way is to say to yourself: “No one cares what I do. It means no one cares for me and I feel utterly alone.”
  • The other is: “No one cares what I do. That’s great, because I can do whatever I want to in my own way and the opportunities are incredible.”

Perspective is everything. It separates the achievement from failure. It is important to build your own perspective. However, it is not the end of the world if you lose it from time to time or borrow it from others. Whatever gets you on a right path….
