Card Game Pontoon

Pontoon blackjack is an unusual variation of this famous casino game typically popular among Australian players. Just like all blackjack games, the main goal is to score closer to 21 points without wiping out. Some players think that it is the most extreme variant of this table game, among all that table games. Either way, this post is some kind of a review for better playing.

Pontoon Blackjack Rules

The game is played with eight 52-cards decks where all cards have the same value as in blackjack. It starts with dealing cards, two cards face up to the player and two cards face down to the dealer.

After all players have played out their hands the dealer exposes his two cards. Then the dealer continues to draw cards until he has a total of 17 points or more, or until he hits a soft 17. The dealer will also stop with any five-card hand.

If the player busts he immediately loses and forfeits his cards and total wager.

Other important rules are:

  • All ties go to the Dealer;
  • Dealer will hit on a hard 16 or a soft 17;
  • Dealer will stand on a hard 17 or soft 18 as well as a 5-card hand of any total;
  • A Dealer’s 5-card hand will beat a Player’s 5-card hand;
  • A player can hit up to 5 times;
  • A player can only stand once he or she reaches a total of 15 points or has 5 cards;
  • Doubling is allowed once on the same hand;
  • Splitting is allowed on any pair, up to three hands.

Ranking Value of Hands

What is a Pontoon in blackjack?

The most valuable hand in this kind of blackjack is a “pontoon”, of course. It is defined as an ace and any 10-point or royal card.

What happens if you get 5 cards in blackjack?

“Five-Card Trick” is any 5-card hand that has not busted. All “five-card tricks” are of the same value, the point total does not matter.

Blackjack busted

When a player gets 21 points or less with 4 or fewer cards, he hits a “non-busted hand”. Hands will be ranked within this group according to the total number of points. Otherwise, a “busted hand” is a hand of 22 points and more.
